Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Beautiful, “antique looking” icon of Christ Pantocrator (“All Powerful,” “All Mighty,” “Ruler of All,” or “Sustainer of All”). The original Christ Pantocrator icon of St. Catherine's Monastery (located at the foot of Mt. Sinai in Egypt) is one of the oldest Byzantine icons, dating from the 6th century AD. It is the earliest known surviving depiction of Jesus Christ as Pantocrator, and it is regarded as one of the most important and recognizable works of Byzantine art. The icon appears to be printed and affixed to a wooden plaque, perhaps in a manner like decoupage. The icon appears to have been “aged,” i.e., made to look old. The icon measures approximately 5 1/2” x 7 3/8”. The age of the icon is unknown. The maker of the icon is unknown, but it’s possible that the icon may have been made in Greece or Russia. Estate sale find. A beautiful reproduction of an inspirational and important work of Christian art! The icon appears to be in very good used condition with signs of wear, such as scratches, scrapes, abrasions, nicks, chips, indentations, spots, stray marks, rub marks, and perhaps some stains or clear lacquer residue on the back. There is a small sticker with the number “375” on the back of the wood plaque (the significance of this number is unknown). This sticker is separating from the wood plaque. It’s possible that some of the blemishes are a result of the manufacturing process and/or the materials used to make the icon. Please see photos, as they constitute part of the description.
