Description: An original drawing in graphite by English sculptor Thomas Wright (1899–1962). The drawing depicts a frontal view of a rather androgynous female model and is signed and dated for 1935 by the artist in the lower right. The sight measurements are 12 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, with mat and frame it is approx. 18 x 13 1/4 inches. Not examined out of frame, paper shows typical age toning, some minor foxing and a horizontal soft crease and has a small chalky spot in upper right, otherwise the drawing appears in excellent condition. It is float mounted inside a French mat with an endpaper backdrop. The frame show chips and wear consistent with age, it is mahogany veneer with ebonised edging and appears to be British in origin and of the period of the drawing. The reverse shows a label identifying the artist and noting that the drawing was a study for a Wright sculpture in the Birmingham Art Gallery Museum. Thomas Wright (1899–1962) Sculptor, draughtsman and teacher, son of a craftsman jeweller, who won a scholarship to the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts. In World War I Wright joined the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot, returning to Birmingham to become a stone-carver. He was responsible for commissioned sculptures on many public buildings, although his private work on family themes remained important to him. During World War II Wright served in the Royal Air Force, after which he taught sculpture at Wolverhampton College of Art. A younger sculptor who worked with Wright was John Paddison. RBSA gave Wright a centenary show, featuring some of his private experiments as a carver, many unfinished or only at the sketch-model stage.
