It was first discovered in 1788in Cradock, South Africa by a Cutch mineralogist by the name Hendrik von Prehn.This is where its name is derived from. Prehnite forms in the veins andcavities of volcanic rock, often basalts, but also occurring in granites. Thisstone is usually translucent, yet rarely transparent or clear. Cat's eyeformations within prehnite are possible, but rare. It is a rather singulargemstone, with no near relatives, although many are visually similar enough tocause confusion.Prehnite can be found inSouth Africa, Australia, Canada, Mali, Morocco, Namibia and a variety of smalldeposits across Europe and the United States.
