Description: Audubon Octavo First Edition Bird Print: "White-Tailed Ptarmigan", Plate 302. This is an original hand-colored stone lithograph from the 1st Edition of the "Royal Octavo Birds of America" by John James Audubon. The print's size is 10-1/4" x 6-1/4" and dry mounted to a matting board sized 16" x 15", ready for framing. This issue is evidenced by by it's size and the statements on the lower left print margin of: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon F.R.S.F.L.S." and lower right margin: "Lith'd Printed & Col'd by J.T. Bowen, Philad." FRSFLS is the the initials standing for Fellow, Royal Society; Fellow, Linnean Society. These were the two top natural history societies in England at the time Audubon published his bird folio. Also the initials of the artist who traced the drawing onto the lithographic stone are placed in the print just below the center of the drawing, in this case "I.C." This image features an adult ptarmigan in it's full winter (white) plumage; in the summer these high altitude birds' plumage is grey, white and brown mottled. Both help camouflage the birds within their Rocky Mountain environment. The Octavo First Edition was printed during the years of 1840 to 1844. The Audubon family utilized a Camera Lucida to reduce the original double elephant folio Havell edition life-sized bird images to the smaller Octavo size (about 10" x 6 1/2"), so it was accessible to more people in that society's era. Today the Audubon images have become public domain, so modern reprints are available, but this print is a rare chance to own an affordable historic original art print, authorized by the Audubon family and printed over 170 years ago.
