Antique oil painting. A. Achilles: ”Dragoons on the move” (1850’s)

Description: ARTIST: The artist is a bit of a mystery to me. There is a Danish artist called August Achilles, who lived from 1798-1861, but his known signatures in my art books does not fit with the signature in this painting. However, I’ve been able to find a very similar painting online attributed to this artist by a renowned auction house, but that painting is dated to 1864, which is after this artist died, whereas this painting, even though I’m not sure whether it’s dated to 1851 or 1857 because the last digit is semi-concealed by the frame, nevertheless falls within the lifetime of the artist. Based on the frame, the date seems to be legit. However, with the uncertainty that I have in regards to the artist being August Achilles, I’ve chosen to leave it at “A. Achilles”. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a dramatic rendering of dragoons and foot soldiers on the move towards a distant village in the dead of winter. I’ve studied their uniforms through a magnifying glass, and I’m fairly sure, that these are Danish soldiers and that the scene is from the First Schleswig war (1848-1850). This war was fought between Denmark and rebels from the duchy Schleswig-Holstein supported by Prussia. The war was won by Denmark and many artists hailed the efforts of the Danish soldiers after that war. The painting is dated to either 1851 or 1857. Note, that the painting has a fairly well-made repair in the grey sky just above one of the trees to the left. Signed: “A. Achilles” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 49,5 cm/19.5 * 39,5 cm/15.6". Without frame: 34,5 cm/13.6" * 24,5 cm/9.6". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint, but it has fairly well-made repair in the grey sky just above one of the trees to the left. The frame has scratches and stains.
