Description: This antique hand fan is a stunning piece of art. In antique paintings there was a way for mothers to commemorate a child that had passed. In this fan, the gouache painting on the top leaf depicts little twin girls. The one on the left is dressed colorfully in pink, a ribbon sash, little birds all around her and she is smiling. The child on the right is dressed in light yellow, no ribbon sash, she isn't smiling and her head is slightly tilted down. She also has little wings. She is the child that has passed. To me, this painting made the mother of the little girls happy to see them together every time she used the fan. Bittersweet! (At least this is my interpretation of the painting.) There are some light spots from age on the top leaf with a tearing next to the right guard. The back leaf is in fairly good condition, no splits in the silk, only some spotting. It measures 11" long.
