Description: Small antique alabaster art sculpture by Professor Guiseppe Bessi in Volterra, Italy circa 1879-1922. The sculpture has a rough oval base with a 2 1/4" round recessed "pool" area near the center. Next to the pool is a round ball that is about 1" high. The ball is a separate piece that was glued on. The edge of the base has vertical lines carved into it. The ball has a carved line at its center point horizontally that goes halfway around the ball with a round divot at the end. The sculpture has the original foil sticker on the bottom that says, "Genuine Alabaster Stone handcarved by FIRM Prof. G. Bessi Volterra Italy. The piece was purchased in 1962 by my mother-in-law while in Italy. Professor Bessi was born in 1857 and passed away in 1922. He attended art school and opened his own workshop in Volterra in 1872. His works were featured in exhibits and expositions in Paris, Italy and the US World's Fair in Louisiana in 1904. Most of his works are busts but in 1879 he began working with other master sculptors who were creating works in the Italian Scapigliatura Art Nouveau movement known as "Liberty" that was a blend of art nouveau and impressionism. Some of his art is displayed in museums. I believe this piece was one of his later works during the "Liberty" era after 1904. There are 2 pieces of adhesive strips on the bottom to prevent scratching furniture or glass it is displayed on. Beautiful one of a kind piece that is in excellent condition,
