Description: This listing is for the antique wooden chewing tobacco barrel that you see in the photos. I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon where I was not told its history. I do not know how old it is. I am guessing that it is late 19th or early 20th century. I leave it to the buyer to decide how old it is. I think that was probably used by a store. It measures close to 22 1/4 inches tall and has a diameter of about 15 3/4 inches. It weighs close to 9 pounds 13 ounces. Much of the paper labels are missing and some of what I think are stenciled words are obscured or missing letters. The brand name is unknown to me but there are identifying words and numbers that I can read or guess at. Those words include: Stuart & Merrick Factory No 3, Stewart. Ithica, 50-10= 40 lbs and Chewing Tobacco. I wonder if “Ithica” is an old spelling of “Ithaca”. There are more words that you might be able to identify by looking at the photos and knowing more than I do about tobacco items. There is an area where it looks like there is green paint. When I look at that area closely it looks to me like there are some shapes that at one time might have been more complete and had some meaning. I guarantee this chewing tobacco barrel to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Other than the damaged paper labels and soil, it is generally in good antique condition with moderate to light signs of use. I do not see any major damage. It might benefit from a careful cleaning. The photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation.
I frequently purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages because of the possibility of them being stolen off of a porch or damaged by weather. I often but not always ship the same or the next day. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. Sometimes, I use used boxes. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends. I might not be available to answer email on weekends.
