Description: This is an antique hand carved African male Blolo Bian statue made and used by the Baule tribe from the Ivory Coast area of Africa. The Baule tribal people believe Blolo Bain figures also referred to as 'spirit husband' statues and Blolo Bla figures also referred to as 'spirit wife' statues if well taken care of will help their human partners in all areas of life. The Baule believe that in the otherworld called Blolo, all spirit beings were married before being born as humans. These spirit spouses called blolo bian, meaning 'spirit husband', and blolo bla, meaning 'spirit wife', follow them into their human lives by way of human-figure sculptures called waka sran, or 'person in wood'.This antique tribally made and used Blolo Bian figure was collected from the Ivory Coast and was made by the Baule people of Africa. This Baule made Blolo Bian is in great antique tribally used rustic condition with wear including surface patina, a crack on the side of the head which was tribally repaired at one point and a crack on the base. This antique Baule statue would make a fine addition to any African art collection. This African statute measures 20.50 inches tall by 4 inches wide and weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces.
