Phelps (1805-1847) became an agent of Garrison's American Anti-Slavery Society in 1834. In 1839 he joined the split to form the Massachusetts Abolition Society, established by more conservative members of the AASS (many of them clergymen) who rebelled against William Lloyd Garrison's radical politics.
