He also worked for the French Navy as well as for L'Illustration. He published his works from 1890 in his own publishing house, in the port of Toulon. His son, also named Alexandre (1875-1950, continued his father's activities and in particular photography for the French Navy. The Bibliothèque nationale de France holds a number of photographs by Bougault dating from 1898.
