His flagship: USS Olympia: this 544 foot protected cruiser was built in San Francisco and commissioned 5 February 1895. She joined the US Asiatic Fleet that year and three years later lead the fleet that destroyed the Spanish Fleet at sea on 1 May 1898 at Manila Bay. She was made a museum ship in Philadelphia in 1957 and continues to raise funds for needed hull repairs.
