Description: This is a handwritten note by George Campbell, the 8th Duke of Argyll (1823-1900). The Duke held several offices during the reignof Queen Victoria, including Lord Privy Seal for three periods of time (from 1853 to 1855, from 1859 to 1866, and from 1880 to 1881); Postmaster General from 1855 to 1858); and Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for India, from late 1868 to 1874. The note is written in ink, and is dated July 20, 1868. It is written on a small blue sheet of the Duke'sstationery, with his residence printed at the top right corner (Argyll Lodge, Kensington). As best as I can tell, the note reads as follows: July 20/68 The Duke of Argyll ???????? to Dr. Roth to returnthe enclosed ???? with rect. The question marks indicate words that I cannot decipher. The word "rect.", found at the end of the the letter, is an abbreviation of the word "receipt ". The letter is about 7" by 4.5". It is in very good condition.
