87-Year-Old FIRST Modern Library 20.2 Graves I, Claudius in DJ

Description: This Modern Library book is #20.2, I, Claudius by Robert Graves. The book has a Toledano semi flexible 7 cover, D or Kent endpapers, and an f jacket. Copyright date is 1934. The copyright page states “First Modern Library Edition, 1937”. Both the jacket back panel and inverse refer to 246 titles and the inverse to 34 giants dating this copy to spring 1937. A long running title in the series from 1937 to 1975, it was available in the flexi binding for only two years, 1937 to 1939. These pointers indicate a First Modern Library Edition in the correct 1st state jacket. The used book cover has a mildly tanned spine cover, decent top stain, and legible front cover gilt but faded spine gilt, lightly bumped corners, and light edgewear. Fanning the pages, I noted no underlining or marginalia, no offensive odor, and the binding shows no separation. The unclipped jacket ($.95) is otherwise complete but has a bit of edgewear, particularly at the spine ends and rubbing along the folds. See photos. The three copies on ABE coded as 1st Modern Library Editions are offered at $125.00, $250,00, and $275.00. On eBay (search: "Modern Library" "I Claudius") of the twenty copies, I was unable to identify any flexi copies let alone any 1st ML editions. Apparently, an uncommon copy in the balloon cloth format, only in production for two years.
