Description: 1993 Gibson J-100 Xtra jumbo acoustic guitar, in vintage sunburst (VS) nitrocellulose lacquer finish built in Montana. This guitar has a solid Sitka spruce top, solid mahogany sides/back/neck, and rosewood fretboard and bridge. Comes with original Gibson hardshell case with pink lining and plush shroud cover. This guitar is similar to the venerable Gibson J-200 but with less ornate inlays and mahogany back/sides rather than maple. This guitar has a standard undersaddle piezo pickup wired to the the standard factory endpin jack, and an aftermarket second output jack installed connected to an internal microphone. No additional pre-amp or electronics are installed, so the volume of the two signals can be controlled externally (either signal can be used alone or blended together). I mostly play unamplified in my smoke-free home, but on the occasions I've plugged in, I ran the two output jacks into an external preamp or mixer to blend the two signals and adjust the volume balance, or sometimes just plugged directly into an amp. I imagine you could also plug one or both of guitar outputs directly into a DAW/recording interface, although I've not tried this myself. The guitar is an excellent player, with a comfortable neck and good action. There is a bit of wear on the frets and fretboard, but less than a lot of guitars of this age. I don't really notice the minor fret wear while playing, I think it plays and sounds great. This is a very nice looking guitar, with a beautiful sunburst finish over the spruce top. There is some rather unique chevron figuring in the bookmatched spruce top which I think looks really nice, and adds some extra visual appeal that you don't see on the average spruce top. There are a few areas of finish checking in the nitrocellulose lacquer, the most noticeable of which I have labeled with blue arrows on the top and back photos. This is minor finish checking common to nitrocellulose lacquer finishes as they age, which many people feel adds to the vintage patina of a fine vintage instrument. The spruce top has one repaired ding below the pickguard, labeled with a yellow circle on the photo, which was sealed with a lacquer drop fill then level sanded and polished back to a gloss. The ding repair is not invisible but you have to make an effort to look for it as it's not that noticeable. There are a few minor light surface scratches and swirl marks in the finish, but nothing very significant. There is a repaired crack below the second output jack just above the binding (labeled on the photo with a yellow box outline). The crack was glued and the finish at the edge of the crack was sealed with lacquer then buffed out. The crack repair is structurally solid, and although not invisible it's not usually that noticeable unless you make an effort to look for it. My father purchased this guitar new circa 1993, and I have owned the guitar for the last 20 years. It has been an excellent guitar for me over the years, but these days I'm more into playing smaller bodied guitars with cutaways so this guitar is no longer getting the playing time it once did. If you're into classic Gibson jumbos, this could be a great guitar for you. Free local pickup in Portland, OR. US Shipping only to contiguous 48 states.
