EvansFrom the International Book of Christmas Carolsmost early Christian hymns, the first Christmas hymns were pro-sung to the melodies ofJewish temple hymns and psalms. In addition to the angels’ song, Gloria in ExcelsisDeo, other great hymns of the early church con-cerned themselves with Christmas, among themVeni Redemptor (Come, Redeemer) attributed toSaint Ambrose, and Corde Natus Ex Parentis (Ofthe Father’s Love Begotten) by Prudentius. Thesehighly spiritual expressions were used as an in-tegral part of the worship service.Carols were a very different breed from thehymns. They derived from secular, pagan sources.Greeks had used them in their plays; Romans, inSaturnalia. They were a popular part of villagefestivals, weddings, and birthdays. The word caroloriginally referred to a circle dance which, for along time, was danced without being sung. Whenwords were added, at first they were likely usedmerely as an accompaniment to the dancemovements. As the church struggled against the influences ofpagan customs, she sternly barred carols fromsacred services. But outside the church, Nativitycarols appeared in increasing quantities andflourished. Nearly all were simple folk songs thatsprang from the hearts of humble country people.Saint Francis of Assisi is credited with bringingcarols into the formal worship of the church. In1223, Francis was conducting Christmas servicesat Grecchio, in the province of Umbria. For sometime, he had been seeking a way to present theconcept of the Incarnation of God to his parish. OnChristmas Eve, he borrowed some farm animals, collected the trappings of a stable, and placed astatue of the infant Christ in a manger filled withhay. In a cave near the ancient castle of Grecchio,he arranged them to re-create the setting of thefirst Christmas night. By special permission of thePope, Francis was allowed to conduct a midnightMass before his handiwork. Friars composed andsang new, joyful songs much more akin to carols And much more! 12911
