Description: ‘61 Topps HOF'er Mathews featuring blue ink auto for sale... Auto is guaranteed authentic. Issue is centered slightly left. Good corners, edges and color. Clean surface and back. Small wrinkle present bottom left (see detailed 3rd scan). Re the auto: I collected this one as a kid in Cooperstown, NY. If you look closely you’ll see that Eddie started, stopped, and re-started his sig. That was because, well, he was hammered. I caught him and Spahn in the Hawkeye Bar of the Otesaga Hotel just before dinner and they were both hitting it pretty hard. Thankfully, they were buzzed just enough to indulge my annoying autograph requests. This came at a cost though; I was a chubby kid with a bowl haircut and they lit me up like a roman candle for it. They laughed so hard they literally fell on the floor. Spahnie carved a hole in his '61 with a Bic fine point-- Gee, thanks, Warren. He then looked through the hole in the card at Eddie and said "Look, Eddie, am a fat kid that collects baseball cards!" The roar of laughter was heard throughout the hotel. When my father came along to see what the commotion was— and he had the same haircut— they nearly passed out again from laughing so hard. I thought Spahn, who wasn’t the most cordial guy to begin with, was going to slug my dad after he said something about their conduct. These guys were rough, old time ball players and they didn’t hold back. It was happy hour, I was on their turf, and there was zero filter. Looking back, it was quite an experience for a 10 year old as I had never seen a drunk before. Some will look at this auto and see imperfection— am sure PSA won’t like it— but now that you know the story behind it, I think it’s pretty cool. A true one-off.
