Description: 1943 Press Photo sand table terrain map used at Fort Frances E. Warren, Wyoming This is an original press photo. Bataan demonstrated that this is a war of supplies; Russian and Lybia have done much to punctuate this observation. Destroy an army's means of getting supplies, and the army, despite its fire power and will to win, faces almost certain defeat. Smash those supply lines from the air and ground and the army's trucks will halt because of lack of fuel; its soldiers will go hungry because of limited food supplies. Keep these from flowing forward and the army must change its whole strategy of attack or defense. "The Fighting Quartermaster" feeds and clothes the rest of our Armed forces. These combat housekeepers are trained to defend the thousands of items they supply for the troops. This is a war of lightning thrusts and America's Quartermasters must match the forward movement of the troops and tanks. This is a war of sudden air attack, and QM soldiers must be able to move their supplies forward despite harassment from the enemy. Thirteen weeks of rigorous training goes into the making of a Quartermaster Officer. Selected from the most promising Quartermaster soldiers, these Officer Candidates begin their day at 5:45 and continue at break neck speed until the late hours of the night. Every minute of their day is accounted for by a program of studies designed to guarantee the delivery "of those goods". Taking hard earned lessons from every battle field of this war, an intensified training program has been developed which simulates the battle conditions that Officer Candidates will meet when they command their units in the field. Typical of their activities was the task given recently to a class of Officer Candidates at Fort Frances E. warren, Wyoming, in which they were to plan and execute the movement of supplies up the icy slopes of Pole Mountain, Wyoming, to supply friendly troops supposedly bivouacked there. Assuming the roles of enemy troops and designated as the "Red Army", the instructors of the class were determined to thwart the successful completion of the supply movement. Regarded as a day-to-day assignment rather than as a challenge, the OCS candidates, designated as the "Blue Army" moved their supplies in record time, despite the wily attempts of the "Red Army" to demoralize them and harass their movements with simulated air, gas, and mechanized attacks. The accompanying series of pictures showing Fort Warren's OCS class in maneuvers up Pole Mountain constitute US Army Pictorial Informaiton Feature #1 for 1943. Prior to the field maneuvers this sand table terrain map is studied by the Officer Candidates to determine the best route to follow up Pole Mountain. Alternate routes best affording concealment are observed, and the whole supply program is carefully worked out before the movement begins. From this terrain map, constructed to scale, and with accompanying march tables, Commanding Officers can tell almost to the minute where the supply train will be at all times.Photo measures 8.25 x 10.25inches.
