Description: A Vintage original, authentic, likely late 1940's - early 1950's, Douglas Aircraft NIKE missile lapel/hat PIN.This appears to be the NIKE 'HONEST JOHN' missile. We believe this was received circa 1940's - 1950's. This was a manufacturer's PIN. The original owner, Major General John F. Freund, was at White Sands Proving Grounds during the late 1940's - early 1950's.Size about 1". The pin is an older 'screw-on' type PIN. See photos.Condition is used. Has scratches and tarnish. I have not tried to clean or polish. See photos. In 1946, Freund represented HQ, Army Ground Forces as Liaison Officer for Guided Missiles at the Wright-Patterson Air Development Center.In 1949, Freund was assigned to the 1st Guided Missile Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas, where he served until July 1952 as battalion commander, group officer, group executive officer and group commanding officer. During 1953 to 1957, Freund was assigned to the Weapons Systems Evaluation Group, Office of the Secretary of Defense, as an army member and guided missile specialists. The MGR-1 Honest John rocket was the first nuclear- capable, surface to surface rocket in the United States arsenal. Originally designated Artillery Rocket XM31 , the first unit was tested on 29 June 1951, with the first production rounds delivered in January 1953. Its designation was changed to M31 in September 1953. The first Army units received their rockets by year's end and Honest John battalions were deployed in Europe in early 1954.
