Gertrude Kay (1884-1939) was an American children's literature illustrator and author best known for her work in fairy tales and beginner novels. She was active during America's Golden Age of Illustration. During her time as an illustrator, Gertrude Kay published numerous children's books and contributed dozens of illustrations to publications like Ladies Home Journal and McCall's. In addition to her work in literature, Gertrude was also known for her illustrated paper dolls and magazine covers. The majority of her work was completed with gouache paints, though she also worked with ink. Her illustrations were highly regarded for their accurate portrayals of children and childhood. "Peter, Patter and Pixie were three children who spent a spring and summer with their 2 grandmothers in a small New England village. What with 2 grandmothers to tell stories, bake cookies and provide barns and attics in which to play on rainy days, they were busy, indeed. In one of the attics they found a high, two-wheeled red cart in which Peter and Pixie rode all over town with Patter as their willing and spirited steed. And they slid down the hay in the barn, fished over the side of Uncle White Caps' boat in the harbor, flew an enormous kite on windy days, went picnicking on sunny days, and did all the things that children can do in a small town to be happy. But perhaps best of all they loved the stories the grandmothers told because these were about Mother Goose and her friends and continued the adventures that began in their own book, as well as answering some of the questions the children had always asked themselves about what happened after to these fascinating characters." First edition copies of this book are exceedingly scarce. This absolutely gorgeous work includes five full-page color plates by the author herself. The book itself is in very good condition. Clean bright pages bereft of inscription, firm binding, tight square boards, etc. A few pages show small 1” tears as shown in photos. Binding is extremely solid otherwise. Despite a few minor tears (photos 3,7,9), this remains a very attractive and scarce example of children's fiction. This book is highly collectible and would make a very unique baby shower gift or the perfect addition to a collection of vintage books!
