Description: After more than 60 years of collecting coins it is time to move my collections along to new homes. Here is a beautiful 1899 Belgium one centime (KM 34.1) minted in Brussels with a low mintage of only 2,500,000 coins. This lion and tablet issue is one of my favorite designs and this one was one of the best examples with extremely fine that I have ever owned. On the obverse is the crowned royal monogram of Leopold II, with the legend in Dutch with the date below. The legend reads “LEOPOLD II KONING DER BELGEN” (Leopold II King of Belgium. On the reverse is a classic design with Belguim’s national symbol, the lion, seated with a paw resting on tablet representing the country’s constitution. The legend on the tablet reads, “BELGISCHE GRONDWET 1831” which translates to Belgium Constitution 1831. The legend on the outside of the coin is “EENDRACHT MAAKT MACHT” which loosely translates to “unity makes strength.” When you find these coins, often the details in the tablet are worn away. This one has full details in the tablet and lion on the reverse and the crown on the obverse - a beautiful coin! This series is copper, weighs 2.0 gm, and is 16.5 mm in diameter.
